GFCF Expert, Barrie Silberberg, Reports...Let’s Talk about Yeast
In my book, I talk a lot about the GFCF diet, yet I also discuss other avenues to take in addition to being GFCF. Today I wanted to address yeast. This is not the ingredient used to make breads, this is Candida Albicans, a fungal organism, which can involve an overgrowth of a different type of yeast in the body that can cause health problems, such as headaches, stomachaches, constipation, gas pains, bloating, fatigue, diarrhea, hyperactivity, aggression, insomnia, lethargy, short attention span, confusion, irritability and even depression. There are tests that you can discuss with your child's physician to see if yeast is in abundance, ravaging your child's body. Test include, urine tartaric acid test, fecal cultures as well as others. Discuss the option of medication use and/or change in diet. People can experience an overgrowth of Candida due to antibiotics, or problems that exist in the immune system impaired by stress or illness. Often if yeast is eradicated, the body can improve in the areas of eye contacts, sensory issues, concentration, word usage, sleep patterns, imaginative play, academic performance and appetite. Elimination of yeast can also assist with eczema, rashes and gut problems. Usually by eliminating simple sugars, such as white sugar, brown sugar, maple sugar, date sugar, raw sugar, turbinado, fruit juice, honey, molasses, maple syrup, corn syrup and rice syrup, as well as many foods you should already be avoiding, by being GFCF, improvements can be noted. Other foods you might need to eliminate to prevent an overgrowth of yeast are: mushrooms, peanuts, vinegar and sorghum, as well as anything marked YEAST on the ingredient label. Do your research, talk to your physician to see if you need to investigate the possibility of yeast issues. |
