Expert, Barrie Silberberg Reports....Vision Therapy
In addition to a change in diet, there are other non-medical options to explore that can assist your children. Many people may not be aware of vision therapy or even the group of optometrists that specialize in this field of eye care. Children with ASD/ADD/ADHD/Learning Disabilities often have visual-motor or perceptual-cognitive deficiencies, sometimes even both. Vision therapy can assist children with these difficulties, learning-related visual problems, lazy eyes, computer vision syndrome, double vision or convergence insufficiency, as well as those with strabismus (eye turns or cross eyed), without surgery. Visual-motor skills and endurance are improved through the use of computer equipment and optical devices-such as therapeutic lenses, prisms and filters. These specially trained optometrists and their assistants help children to focus better, allow their eyes to work together (teaming), to read more effectively, and possibly allow them to stop wearing glasses. Vision therapists assign a variety of games, visual exercises and activities for the child to do, to assist in improving their visual difficulties. Many times the child can do assigned activities at home, upon receiving a diagnosis and instruction in the proper visual aides.
